The Queer Art Salon (QAS) was conceived to demonstrate that Queer visual artists exist in endless iterations and infinite forms. There is no single narrative or expected outcome. The artworks presented can be overtly related to the artist’s Queerness or subvert all expectations. Highlighting a broad spectrum of identities and artistic expressions, this exhibition celebrates the full range of the Queer experience–through what is included in the 2025 show, and most importantly, what perspectives may be uncovered or encouraged because of this supported public exhibition.
Selected artworks for 2025 focus on LGBTQ+ history, which includes recent actions and events that impact the lives and safety of the Queer community. Other artworks tell the story of family–both biological and chosen families/communities that are vital to the Queer experience. The body and self emerge as a theme for exploration in many pieces. Queer artists may grapple with the same bodily issues as non-queers, but there are often additional added layers shaped by gender identity, gender expression, anatomy, and sexuality—elements that can challenge or resist a heteronormative status quo. Also strongly present in the collection of works is tribute to the origins of Pride as protest, with several pieces demonstrating resistance, honoring activist legacies, and reclaiming public space as a site of visibility and defiance.
The Queer Art Salon aims to transcend the confines of identity while recognizing its profound influence on creativity. Viewers are invited to engage with the multiplicity of Queer voices and perspectives and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ+ art and artists.
Large print, español, በአማርኛ, Tiếng Việt , and Braille translations of this statement are available in the binder provided at the start of the exhibition. A descriptive tour designed for visitors who are blind or low vision will be available.
