Ashley Jaye Williams

Ashley Jaye Williams, curator and co-founder of the Queer Art Salon, explores defiance and otherness resulting from the dissonance of modern life, gender, and technology. They create complex narratives that expand and explore individuals who have been marginalized by society. Their work challenges the conflict that arises when one is forced to conform to false, technologically influenced versions of themselves. The artist’s work constructs alternative realities that go beyond societal limitations and reject the objectification they have experienced as a femme presenting person. Instead, they reimagine objectification as a means to disarm the patriarchy.

Two Sides of One Story

Acrylic on canvas, 60” x 108”

The Jaye Williams product line for men was a project that aimed to "give back" to the many loud, and abrupt voices of cis het men. Because these men have given SO MANY loud opinions on the bodies, minds and state of women... I felt, as a woman, it was time to do some emotional labor back in return. After months of research; I was able to distill out the qualities of women that men value... while siphoning out the errors embodied within "human women" that many men express so much hatred for. The product line seeks to find an answer to the age old question of "how can we make the perfect 'woman' for cis het men that actually hate women?". The product line appeals to the consumer power of men as a "protected class", and allows them an a la carte selection of "femme."

The diptych is an exploration of trauma; and how one person's understanding of their own trauma can shift from before treatment to after treatment. Someone who experiences trauma can initially have one understanding of a traumatic event initially... and then pursue healing that gives them a completely different understanding of this same traumatic event. This painting is deeply personal and echos my own experience with trauma and violent sexual assault. In order to replicate this division of time and space in a visual manner; I painted each part of the diptych in different studio locations. By creating each painting in isolation from one another--I want to mimic the complex duality of my negative personal experience.
