Kiel Posner

Kiel Posner is a ceramicist. In their work they engage with materials and processes that were used in their family’s now defunct button manufacturing factory that was run out of the garment district in the early to mid 20th century. Through reperforming and recontextualizing their family's labor practices Kiel hopes to reconcile their identity and politics in the present using history as a vehicle for understanding their own familial, religious, and sexual etymologies.

Mirrors in a House of Mourning

Porcelain, ceramic waterslide decal, film photo- Washington Square Park circa World Pride 2019, 14” x 10” x 15”

In Judaism during the mourning period or shiva, mirrors in the household are covered as a way of taking the focus off of ego within the home. Some also believe covering mirrors also protects the spirit of the individual who has passed as they visit the home during shiva. In this work I am taking the time to mourn the world pride I experienced just before Covid in NYC. It feels full circle and also very somber for world pride to swing back around to DC this year. In this work I am attempting to harness the joy I experienced in the past into this present moment to anchor myself in how freeing Pride should be in the more hostile climate of World Pride 2025.
