Nathan Hosmer Nevarez

Nathan Hosmer Nevarez is a visual artist whose work challenges the traditional conceptions of demons, transforming them from symbols of fear and malice into multifaceted beings. His paintings and mixed media work create portals to places where those who are labeled as demons by those in power are portrayed as powerful figures. Nevarez received his BFA in Painting & Printmaking with a minor in chemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has exhibited his work in group shows at Steven Zevitas Gallery, the Greenville Museum of Art in NC and the Museum of Contemporary art in Virginia Beach. Nathan’s work has recently been featured in New American Painting South Issue 166. He is also the recipient of many awards including a Fulbright Grant to Ecuador for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Dejanme jugar con mis muñekitas (Let me play with my poly pockets)

Oil and wax on canvas, 12” x 14”

I think about how the arrival of Poly Pockets as girl coded toys can interact with the arrival of a demon figure covered in flames. What about a girl's identity allows herself to be oriented to play with toys like dolls but a little boy is constantly corrected and reoriented to not play with those toys and to rather play with trucks or whatever. How does this constant reorientation of the little boy manifests itself in him?
