I Am Not A Lord : I Am A Lady

Avery Schoenberger

This piece tells the story of the power of trans existence by bringing together the coin, an ancient symbol of power; olive branches, for peace and persistence; and the quote (the title) written in Greek, which was said by the Roman Emperor Elagabalus.

Avery Schoenberger is an emerging queer artist raised and based in Northern Virginia. With a BA from the University of Pittsburgh in both Studio Arts and Classics, they apply ancient history and a baroque painting language to their interest in deconstructing genderqueer experiences. Avery creates realistic oil paintings that bring together research, beauty, and thought-provoking imagery, resulting in work that is impactful both emotionally and intellectually.

Avery’s art has been displayed at the Ridderhof Gallery at the University of Mary Washington, Artspace Radius 250, and The Torpedo Factory, as well as the Cathedral of Learning and the Hillman Library at the University of Pittsburgh.
